Real Madrid believe it or not, are one of the big beneficiaries of remaining the only Spanish club in the last 16 of the Champions League.
It may just be from an economic standpoint, but it is significant.
Spanish clubs are not usually the ones that earn the most from the famous market pool, the share of profits that UEFA distributes according to the audiovisual market of the country the team represents.
On the one hand, Spanish clubs were disadvantaged by the fact that they were not the ones that received the most from this concept, but also because the cake was usually shared between three, four or even five teams that went far in the competition.
Real Madrid pocketed 116 million euros net after the Paris final last May, including 16.8m euros for audiovisual rights, out of the just over 300m euros UEFA allocated to all countries for audiovisual rights. The Spanish teams shared the market pool of around 57 million last season.
Ten million more than last season
For this edition, Real Madrid have already been left alone.
UEFA has already distributed half of the amount (28.5 million based on the amount allocated last season), which is distributed according to the position in their league last season.
Madrid, as champions, would receive 40 percent, or 11.2 million.
But it is from the other half of the jackpot that Madrid will benefit from the elimination of Barcelona, Sevilla and Atletico.
At the moment, it is estimated that they can take an extra 8.6 million euros because there are no other Spanish teams in the round of 16, but it could reach 11.7 million euros if they reach the final.
To these figures must be added the 3.9 million euros Madrid have for their six matches in the group stage.
In total, they could earn 26.8 million compared to the 16.8 million earned last season.
The case of Juventus or PSG
It is worth noting that Juventus, after losing in the final against Real Madrid, broke the record in prize money with 110 million euros, more than the winners, Los Blancos, who after winning their 14th title against Liverpool also earned 88.6 million.
Another example was the Champions League final between PSG and Bayern Munich in 2020. It was the French club that took the lion’s share of the earnings with 126.8 million to the champions’ 125.4 million.
