After a week in the headlines, in which Russian owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government, throwing the club into chaos, Chelsea ended on a high with a 1-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle.
Securing a fifth win in a row, Chelsea left it late before Kai Havertz gave the Blues an 88th minute lead over the Magpies.
Newcastle came into this tie unbeaten since a shock FA Cup defeat to Cambridge United in January, but were beaten by the reigning European champions.
- Premier League disqualify Abramovich as Chelsea director
- Chelsea FC’s accounts temporarily frozen amid Abramovich sanctions
There were penalty shouts for Newcastle, but referee David Coote waved on as Chelsea enjoyed the better chances. Despite the intense Chelsea possession, and several first-half chances, there was nothin to separate the two sides.
That was until Jorginho played in a perfectly weighted pass to Havertz to poke beyond Martin Dubravka. (AF)
