With the upsurge of underage tricycle riders in Kano state, the Resource Center for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has brought to attention the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA) to the impending rise of the underage operators.

CHRICED believes that this development constitutes a breach of the fundamental human rights of the riders and portends a great threat to the safety and general wellbeing of the citizens of Kano state. Thus, the lack of physical and mental maturity of the underage riders could make them a major cause of accidents as well as an impediment to the free flow of traffic in the state.

According to CHRICED in a statement signed by the Executive Director, Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, “Certain underage riders who are as young as 10 years old are often neither trained nor licensed and therefore constitute a nuisance to other road users by their frequent and flagrant breach of traffic rules and regulations across the state.

“CHRICED is concerned that children who are supposed to be in school acquiring education or other forms of productive life support skills are unfortunately being exploited by some unscrupulous members of the society who are taking advantage of their vulnerability to engage them in child labour for meagre remuneration which would not have been so if the owners engaged adult tricycle riders.”

CHRIDED is equally worried about the exploitative practice of engaging underage tricycle operators which exposes them to all forms of dangers at an early age, amidst the fact that some of the underage children are not under any form of parental control or care.

To address this menace, CHRICED calls on KAROTA to outmeasure in place to address the threats posed by the activities of underage tricycle riding in the state. The Civic organization also believes that the full enforcement of extant laws on the possession of a valid rider’s license and attainment of a minimum of 18 years of age would ameliorate the dangers posed by the underage tricycle riders in the state.
