Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) says plans are underway to provide public toilets in 39 communities of its district to improve public healthcare and hygiene.
The chairman of the council, Mr John Gabaya, disclosed this while reviewing his administration’s achievements in 2021 at a meeting with members of his administration on Monday in Bwari, Abuja.
Gabaya said that the move was made to comply with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 6.2, which called for adequate and equitable sanitation for all citizens.
He said that the council had during the year under review reached an agreement with the FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency for steady water supply.
“This is also in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to provide public toilets in 39 communities across the 10 wards of the district and the projects will commence soon.
“The construction and use of public toilets is part of government’s efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve public healthcare of citizens.”
The chairman said that it had become imperative for mankind to take the issue of climate and environment more seriously, as it had become a thing of concern, hence needed utmost attention.
He said that the council had increased its efforts toward sanitising the environment especially in the areas of refuse, waste management and evacuation in most of the townships in spite of its lean purse.
Gabaya further said that efforts had been made in collaboration with the FCT Ministerial Taskforce toward clearing of shanties and removal of illegal structures.
“As well as clearing of roadside hawkers in Dutse-Alhaji, Kubwa, Mpape and Dei-dei market areas,’’ he said. (NAN)
