The Dangote Group has announced an investment exceeding $280 million in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology and infrastructure, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a greener Nigeria through his CNG initiative.
In a Sunday statement, the company highlighted that its $280 million investment strengthens its role as a leader in the CNG sector, with a commitment to mitigating climate change and supporting a low-carbon economy. This step is seen as a reflection of the company’s dedication to sustainable development.

President Tinubu has promoted gas as Nigeria’s transition fuel, driving policies to foster private sector investments and expand Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure, with the aim to boost energy efficiency and economic growth. A key part of this initiative includes distributing one million free CNG conversion kits to support transportation services across the country.
Dangote Cement, a subsidiary of Dangote Group, stated its intention to convert its fleet to CNG. Group Managing Director Arvind Pathak explained that the $280 million will go toward acquiring fully CNG-powered trucks. “This move marks a significant milestone in Dangote’s clean energy transition, aiming to operate most of its fleet on CNG by mid-2026,” Pathak stated.
According to Pathak, the company has already received its first 1,500 mono-fuel CNG trucks, with 1,600 additional trucks expected by the year’s end. “To facilitate this transformation, we are investing in expanding our CNG fueling infrastructure, ensuring that our growing fleet has reliable access to CNG,” he added, underscoring a plan to accelerate the timeline starting in the first quarter of 2025.
The company’s early adoption of CNG, Pathak emphasized, has positively impacted Nigeria’s journey towards cleaner fuels. A CNG station at Obajana, capable of refueling over 3,000 trucks, exemplifies this commitment, and a second facility is currently being developed in Ibese to support the fleet.
Aliko Dangote, President/CEO of the Dangote Group, remarked that this investment aligns with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement, which targets net-zero emissions by 2060. “In this pursuit of transition to clean energy, we are optimistic about achieving remarkable outcomes, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu leading the nation’s drive towards energy efficiency,” he stated.
Dangote added that the company’s position as Nigeria’s largest operator of CNG trucks reflects its support for the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “We are now using CNG vehicles, especially with the new policy under the Renewed Hope Agenda by President Tinubu. We are committed to a cleaner and greener future,” he affirmed.
