A member of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, has said that members of the New Nigeria Peopleโs Party (NNPP) in Kano State are defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to a loss of confidence in the ruling party.
Doguwa, an APC lawmaker representing the Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency of Kano State, made the statement in a press release on Friday.

The NNPP has been the ruling party in Kano, but several key members, including aides to Governor Abba Yusuf, have recently resigned and joined the APC. In August, Abdulraham Kadamaz, Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Entrepreneurship, resigned from the government and party. A month later, Sani Dambo, Special Adviser on Investment, also defected to the APC. Additionally, NNPP chieftain Rabiu Durun, along with others, has made the switch.
Doguwa criticized the Yusuf administration, saying, โThe disgruntled NNPP government has already lost focus and fell out with the good people of Kano State. No matter the noise (Rabiu) Kwankwaso makes, the APC in Kano is already poised to unseat the kangaroo NNPP government in Kano State come 2027.โ
He urged members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement to align with the APC for better governance, stating that the party is prepared to reclaim power in the next governorship election.
In response, the Chairman of the NNPP in Kano, Hashim Dungurawa, dismissed Doguwa’s claims, affirming the party’s strong standing. He said, โYou see, that person you have just mentioned, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, he is our boy. He was a member of the NNPP before. We are his leaders and we will remain his leaders forever.โ
Dungurawa added that the party continues to attract defectors, with over 3,000 people recently joining the NNPP from the local and state governments.
Addressing the issue of insecurity, Doguwa highlighted improvements in the North-west region, claiming that many displaced persons are returning to their homes and farms following government crackdowns on bandits. โA fresh air is already permeating the North-west in view of the onslaught against these bandits. Our people are now returning to their farms. We pray for a bumper harvest,โ he said.
Doguwa, who also chairs the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for establishing the North West Development Commission (NWDC), which aims to accelerate the rebuilding of the region, a key contributor to Nigeriaโs food supply.
However, despite the government’s efforts, many areas in states like Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna continue to suffer terrorist attacks, with thousands of residents displaced.
