Dubai hospital to separate conjoined Nigerian twins for free

Burjeel Medical City, Abu Dhabi, UAE, has offered to operate on conjoined twins Hassana and Hussaina for free.

Mr Nuhu Fulani Kwajafa, National Coordinator of GIPLC, said this on Saturday.

According to him, the babies born in Zaria a few months ago were triplets.

One triplet is healthy, but the other two share a stomach and vital organs.

The Dubai hospital initially estimated the cost of separating the girls at $300,000, but after assessing the case, offered to do it for free.

Another London hospital billed GIPLC £896,000 for the surgery.

Mr Kwajafa had earlier posted on social media: “After consulting with doctors in the UK and Dubai, we understand Hassana and Hussaina’s case is the first of its kind and a surgical procedure to separate them would cost over $300,000.

“Dubai Hospital, Burjeel Medical City, Abu Dhabi, UAE, has offered to perform the surgery for free on humanitarian grounds.

“The Chairman of Medical City is interested in the case and has offered to send a team of doctors to Nigeria to accompany the family back to UAE for a 9-month post-surgery stay for close observation and recovery. Italian, American, and UAE doctors will perform the surgery.

During one of GIPLC’s fund drives for the family’s upkeep at Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital, where they’ve been for three months, Mr Samuel Aruwan sent N600,000 for their care and promised to be involved in their surgery.

Governor Nasir el-Rufai promised to help pay the surgery bills.

Mr Nuhu Kwajafa said he’s still seeking funds to transport the conjoined sisters and their family to Dubai and for their feeding and housing there.

He asked Nigerians to help the infants.
