Meeting Raises Speculations

The recent meeting between former Kaduna State governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai and NNPP leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has sparked speculation of a northern coalition aiming to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

Political Visits to Buhari

Prior events have drawn attention, with numerous northern political figures visiting former President Muhammadu Buhari’s residence.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accompanied by ex-governors of Sokoto and Adamawa states, visited Buhari for Sallah.

Within days, El-Rufai and former Borno State governor Ali Modu Sheriff also visited Buhari.

Senator Shehu Sani criticized these visits, suggesting an attempt to revive Buhari’s political influence and mobilize support for the 2027 election, warning against stoking Arewa sentiment irresponsibly.

El-Rufai and Kwankwaso’s Grievances

Both El-Rufai and Kwankwaso have grievances with Tinubu’s administration.

Analysts believe their meeting could be part of a strategy to support a strong candidate against Tinubu in 2027.

Despite Tinubu’s attempts to woo Kwankwaso to the APC, his political rivalry with the current party chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, poses obstacles.

Kwankwaso’s dissatisfaction with Tinubu over a broken ministerial promise and recent EFCC investigations into alleged fraud complicate their relationship. Similarly, El-Rufai’s non-clearance for a cabinet position by the National Assembly and subsequent indictment by the Kaduna State Assembly add to his woes.

Political Maneuvering for 2027

El-Rufai’s recent political activities suggest future ambitions.

Meetings with leaders from various parties, including the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the APC, indicate his strategic planning.

Observers believe these movements could lead to significant political shifts before the 2027 elections.

Some analysts compare these maneuvers to the formation of the APC in 2014, which ended the PDP’s long rule. They suggest the coalition efforts led by Atiku Abubakar may similarly disrupt the current political landscape.
