Suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, may potentially face charges related to the illegal possession of a firearm and live ammunition, according to a report by Channels Television.

Emefiele is alleged to have committed two offenses: the possession of a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a license, which is contrary to Section 4 of the Firearms Cap F28 Laws of the Federation 2004 and punishable under Section 27 (1) (b) (i) of the same act, as well as the possession of 123 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without a license.

The reported offenses took place at No.3B Iru Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, around June 15, 2023.

Count one of the charges states that Emefiele, residing at No 8 Colorado Street, Maitama Abuja, had in his possession a single-barrel shotgun without a license.
The reported offenses took place at No.3B Iru Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, around June 15, 2023.

Count one of the charges states that Emefiele, residing at No 8 Colorado Street, Maitama Abuja, had in his possession a single-barrel shotgun without a license. This contravenes Section 4 of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation 2004 and is punishable under Section 27 (1b) of the same Act.

Count two alleges that Emefiele had in his possession 123 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without a license. This act is contrary to Section 8 of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation 2004 and punishable under Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act.

However, a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Apo, Abuja, recently declared his arrest and detention void.

This development follows an earlier ruling by a High Court in Maitama, Abuja, instructing the Department of State Service (DSS) to either charge Emefiele to court within seven days or release him.

On Thursday, the spokesman for the DSS stated that the decision to charge Emefiele was made in compliance with the court order. Previously, the DSS had sought to arraign Emefiele on charges related to terrorism.
