Governor of Kano state Abdullahi Ganduje has applauded House of Representatives member, Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum over his efforts in the creation of four additional Emirates in the state.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje made the commendation on the occasion of a dinner organized in honour of Sarkin Dawaki Babba, Aminu Babba DanAgundi.

According to the governor, the additional emirates which were created in 2019 were said to have been established to reduce the burden on the then Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II.

The Governor explained that Kabiru Rurum’s effort and that of his comrades were committed which enabled the State to attain its desired result.

“If not for him and his colleagues who were resolute and were on the same page, this change wouldn’t have taken place. We were on the same page and shared the same ideology and were determined to get results.” Ganduje said.

Among the new created as a result of the effort of Rurun were Gaya, Rano, Karaye, and Bichi which were formerly districts under the Kano Emirate Council.

Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, prior to his position as the House of Representative member representing Rano constituency, was the speaker of the EmirateKano State House of Assembly in 2015.

The creation of the emirates and appointment of their first-class emirs generated controversy in Kano, as many believed the development was designed to weaken the influence of Kano Emir Sanusi.

Ganduje created Bichi, Karaye, Rano, and Gaya emirates and elevated all to first-class status in a manner some perceived the decision was aimed at pruning the powers of the Emir of Kano.

“A multi-stakeholder approach played a critical role in the creation of the additional four emirates in the state. All the stakeholders helped in one way or the other for all the emirates to be created to reach the present position,” the Governor said.

“While the traditional institutions of the beneficial places together with their subjects agitated for the uplift of their status, with recourse to historical positions of those places, the State House of Assembly did the needful by following the due process in their legislation of the Law establishing the additional Emirates.

“From our own side, as a government, we responded positively to the yearnings and aspirations of our people. We tried our best to give them what they needed.

“Imams and other community leaders prayed fervently for more Emirates. Business communities followed suit.

“Students unions, youth and women associations, among other unions also played vital roles in that direction.”
