The government of Equatorial Guinea has restricted its citizens from downloading and sharing photos, videos, and audio files on WhatsApp when using mobile data.

Local news outlet Ahora EG reports that this restriction has sparked frustration among citizens, who now rely on WiFi networks to share multimedia content.

The ban aligns with recent directives to telecommunications operators aimed at limiting access to what officials consider inappropriate material. This decision comes amid a high-profile scandal involving Baltasar Engonga, Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF).

Engonga is accused of misconduct linked to alleged extramarital affairs with spouses of prominent officials, including the wives of the Vice President and Inspector General of Police.

The scandal erupted during a fraud investigation of the 54-year-old economist. According to reports, ANIF investigators uncovered over 400 explicit videos in his home and office, which purportedly document his encounters with married women. These videos, allegedly recorded with consent, have since circulated widely on social media, igniting public controversy.

In response to the scandal, Vice President Teddy Nguema has introduced plans to install surveillance cameras in state offices. Nguema emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enforce adherence to public service regulations and to curb misconduct among officials.
