Dr Adeyemi Sunday, Rector, The Polytechnic, Igbo-Owu, Ilorin Campus, has advised lecturers in tertiary institutions to shun bribery and embrace discipline in discharging their duties.
Giving the task in Ilorin on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Sunday advised lecturers to stop encouraging examination malpractice by receiving bribe from their students.
According to him, most lecturers lack self control and not contented with their legitimate earnings thereby accepting bribe from their students to award marks.
“Stop encouraging malpractices and be disciplined. Stop accepting bribes from your students to give out marks.
“Most lecturers are trying to leave beyond their income. The future of Nigeria education is at stake if we continue to accept offers from students.
“Be disciplined, live within your income and discharge your duty effectively without being enticed by any student,” he urged.
The rector called on education stakeholders and various institutions to be vigilant and monitor both lecturers and students via technology and undercover agents.
He also appealed to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reach an agreement to end the lingering strike in overall national interest.
Sunday noted that the strike has caused some students to indulge in dangerous and anti-social behaviours.
“It is advisable they both reach agreement and call of the strike for the sake of the students. Students are going wild and misbehaving on the streets,” he said.
The rector also tasked students to use the period of the ongoing strike to learn entrepreneurship skills instead of being idle.
Besides, he advised youths to enrol for skills acquisition programmes and add value to their selves.
