Residents of Gadar-Tamburawa area in Dawakin Kudu local government area of Kano state are enduring significant disruptions to their daily lives and businesses due to electricity shortages.
The situation has become increasingly dire as power supply remains erratic, with electricity available only twice a week for a maximum of an hour at a time.
Daily News 24 reports that the community has been grappling with inadequate power supply for several years.

Abdulkadir Muhammad, a local resident, explained, “Our electricity supply has been inconsisteneven for over two years, but now we barely get power twice a week and it only lasts for less than an hour. Despite paying at least N4,000 monthly or more for electricity, the situation has worsened.”
Residents observe that neighboring communities, such as Kwanar-Dawaki, enjoy more reliable electricity, leading them to question the disparity in service.
A local shop owner voiced frustration, stating, “We have reached out to KEDCO about these issues, but no effective action has been taken. It seems our area is neglected while other areas receive more consistent power.”
The unreliable electricity supply has forced many businesses to depend on expensive generators, adding to their financial strain amid the country’s economic difficulties.
“We rely on generators to keep our refrigerators running, which is becoming increasingly costly. With the current economic hardships, it’s extremely tough,” another shop owner shared.
Additionally, the power shortages have contributed to a rise in crime, especially phone snatching.
“With many parts of our community in darkness, criminals are exploiting the situation. People are closing their shops and going home early for safety reasons,” a local resident recounted.
The community is calling on the government and Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to address these urgent issues and ensure a stable electricity supply.
