As Nigeria prepares for another protest tomorrow, Kano residents are getting ready to take to the streets again in what has been dubbed a sequel to August’s “hunger protest.”
Last month, thousands of Nigerians protested the skyrocketing prices of food, fuel, and other basic necessities.
Daily News 24 reports that despite the demonstrations, the cost of living continues to rise, leaving many feeling desperate and unheard.

Hamza Dauda, a sugarcane seller in Kano, expressed his commitment to the ongoing protests, vowing to fight until the government addresses the public’s demands. “We will protest again and again until our demands are being met. It is the only way we will tell the government how we feel about their bad policies,” Dauda stated, echoing the frustrations of many across the country.
However, not all Kano residents share Dauda’s enthusiasm. Aminu, another local, argued that the planned protest is futile. “What is the use of protesting when the government will still go ahead and do what they want to do without listening to the demands of the people? After the last protest, things even got worse, so there is no use,” he said.
Tomorrow’s protest coincides with Nigeria’s Independence Day, but for some, the celebration feels hollow. Aisha Bello, a Kano resident, voiced her discontent, questioning the significance of marking the country’s independence while many struggle to afford basic necessities. “There is no need for me to celebrate the independence of Nigeria when the price of food is high, the price of fuel is high. Life is difficult in Nigeria,” Bello said.
Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State police command through a phone interview, assured residents that adequate measures are in place to maintain peace.
“Kano State police command has deployed adequate personnel and equipment at strategic locations to ensure the safety of lives and properties in Kano. Whoever loves Kano wouldn’t want to see what happened in the last protest happen again. Whoever wants to come out to cause mayhem will be dealt with according to the law,” Kiyawa stated.
