Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George has quickly found a new managerial position at Rivers United, a prominent team in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

This new role comes just three weeks after his resignation as head coach of Nigeria’s men’s senior national team.

Rivers United, the 2022 NPFL champions, announced Finidi’s appointment on Wednesday, with his official unveiling scheduled for Thursday. The club expressed their enthusiasm in a statement: “Rivers United Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Finidi George as our new technical manager.”

The club highlighted Finidi’s extensive experience and impressive credentials, noting his successful playing career of over fifteen years. “His impressive credentials include winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League with Enyimba International FC in 2023,” the statement continued.

“As a coach, Finidi has demonstrated his ability to lead teams to success, and we are confident that he will bring his expertise and passion to our club. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to a successful tenure under his leadership.”

Finidi’s departure from the Super Eagles came in June, after a brief stint that saw two World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic end in disappointment. This led the Nigeria Football Federation to seek a foreign technical adviser for the national team.

Prior to his tenure with the Super Eagles, Finidi coached Enyimba for nearly three seasons, culminating in leading the team to their record-ninth NPFL title in 2023. At Rivers United, he succeeds Evans Ogenyi, who had taken charge following the dismissal of long-serving coach Stanley Eguma.

A native of Port Harcourt, the 53-year-old Finidi began his career with Calabar Rovers and Iwanyanwu Nationale and also played for local club Sharks FC before the club’s merger to form Rivers United. His career then soared in Europe, adding to his rich football legacy.

Rivers United looks forward to leveraging Finidi’s wealth of knowledge and experience as they aim for further success under his leadership.
