After securing a document from the U.S. State Department, it has been revealed that former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, presented a unique geometrically patterned leather mat to former U.S President Barack Obama shortly after winning the 2015 presidential election.
The document, as reported by Peoples Gazette, states that the gift consisted of a 7-foot diameter circular leather mat along with three 28-inch diameter leather covers for seating pads.
The total value of these gifts, which were received on July 19, 2015, was estimated at $2,260.00 by the U.S. government.
The annual filing by the U.S. State Department’s protocol office records gifts given to U.S. presidents by foreign leaders.
These gifts often find their way into the National Archives and Records Administration.
Moreover, the document explains that the list encompasses gifts received in previous years, with some dating back to 2010.
While these gifts were reported in the 2018 filing, they were not included in earlier reports due to a lack of relevant information received by the Office of the Chief of Protocol, Department of State.
