According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), Bolanle Austin-Peters’ biopic film, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, has taken the second spot at the Nigerian box office, grossing a total of ₦89.1 million since its release on May 17, 2024.
The film, which tells the story of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s mother, had a strong opening week with ₦46.3 million and maintained its momentum in the second week with ₦42.7 million.

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti has surpassed other Nollywood films, including Ajosepo, which previously held the top spot for a month, and Blacksmith: Alagbede, which has dropped to number eight.
The only film currently outperforming Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti is the Hollywood film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which debuted at number one with a weekly gross of ₦53.3 million.
The success of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti is a testament to the growing demand for high-quality Nollywood films that showcase the rich history and culture of Nigeria.
