Reports say the Kano State Police Command is planning to arrest a famous critic and political affairs commentator, Bashir Gentile, for criticizing the governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, on local radio programmes.
Mr Gentile, an associate of a former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shekarau, is also an aide to President of the Senate Ahmad Lawan.
Many critics of the governor have recently faced persecution, police intimidation and kangaroo trial in the state.
Reports on Tuesday revealed that the police in Kano are on the trail of an ardent critic of the governor, Bashir Hayatu Gentile, presumably on allegations of criminal defamation.
A similar allegation has been used as an excuse to arrest, harass and jail other critics of the governor, Muaz Magaji and Abdulmajid Danbilki Kwamanda recently, Nigerian Sketch reports.
Solacebase reported that the petition this time was through a proxy called Bella Kano, a revenue consultant engaged by the Kano State government to boost its internal revenue.
According to Daily Nigerian, after attempts to arrest Mr Gentile failed, the police now invited him for questioning over a petition against him.
When contacted for comment, the spokesperson of the command, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, said he is not aware of the invitation or plan to arrest him but would make further findings on the matter.
