The gas explosion which happened in Kano state on Thursday night has resulted to the loss of two lives, with over 20 victims receiving treatment at the Murtala Mohammed specialist hospital in Kano.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to Daily News 24 said the explosion happened when a gas retailer lost grip of a cylinder which got in contact with the fire of a fish seller while the retailer was filling gas for a customer.

Sani Ibrahim, a resident of the house which was burnt said that the he lost all his properties in the fire, thanking God for saving his life. ‘’I thank God that I didn’t loose my life. I lost everything in the fire and we took over 20 people to the hospital yesterday.

‘’This morning, an 11 year old was confirmed dead. May Allah protect us.’’ He said.

Atiku Maniru, the brother of an 11 year who lost his life said his younger sibling was at the scene of the explosion and  lost his life when the explosion happened.

‘’When fire caught the shop of the gas retailer, many children went there and my brother was among them. Later on, an explosion happened and then he was affected by the fire, we lost him this morning.’’ He said.

Nasir Gwarzo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs said that the ministry is committed to supporting the victims of the explosion, adding that 70% of the victims were seriously injured.

Police Public Relations Officer of the Kano command of the Kano State Police Force SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa hints that investigation into the explosion is underway and sensitization will be carried out in the state to prevent such occurrence from repeating itself.

‘’On arriving the scene we were able to recover 7 gas cylinders and the commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into the matter.

‘’Plans are ongoing for sensitization to communities and stakeholders involved so stop incidences like this from happening.’’ He concluded.
