The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed allegations of naira abuse against Mrs Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje.

The EFCC clarified this in a statement on Monday following a viral video that sparked widespread accusations.

In the footage, naira notes were seen being sprayed at a wedding held in Kano on October 24, 2024. Many viewers believed the event was the wedding of Goje’s daughter and demanded action against her and others involved.

However, Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, confirmed that while the video did show naira abuse, it was not from Fauziya Goje’s wedding. Instead, it was recorded at the wedding reception of Amina Babagana Zannah, daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, the owner of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise with branches in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai.

“The attention of the EFCC has been drawn to a viral video showing the naira being freely sprayed at a wedding in Kano,” the statement read. “Accusations were made against Mrs Fauziya Danjuma Goje by members of the public, including an editorial from a prominent national newspaper.”

Oyewale stated that upon investigation, it was confirmed that the naira abuse took place during the wedding dinner of Zannah, not Goje’s daughter. He added that Hajara Seidu Haruna acknowledged the video’s authenticity and confirmed it was from her daughter’s event.

He explained further, “Haruna admitted the incident occurred at her daughter’s wedding on October 24, 2024. The groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, is from Niger Republic, and those involved in spraying naira and dollar notes were from his family.”

The EFCC has invited Mohammad and others seen in the video to its headquarters in Abuja for further questioning. Oyewale emphasized that the agency remains committed to its campaign against naira abuse and will continue to act against violators without targeting anyone wrongly accused.

“The commission appreciates the growing awareness around naira abuse due to its campaigns. It remains firm in this fight and will not spare any offenders, regardless of their status,” Oyewale added.
