“In Nigeria, this year’s results show a continued interest in the political and economic landscape, with searches related to the US elections, the new national anthem, and the national grid topping the news category in this order,” Google stated in the report.

The report also revealed that Nigerians were particularly interested in public figures, with Bobrisky emerging as the most searched individual of the year. In the music scene, artists such as Shallipopi and Khaid saw a significant rise in popularity, appearing on the overall personalities list. The top trending song for 2024 was “I Don’t Care” by Boy Spyce, followed closely by “Ozeba” and “Commas” by Ayra Starr.

Nigerians also showed a keen interest in song lyrics, with tracks like “Ogechi,” “Ozeba,” and “Omemma” by Chandler leading the searches in the lyrics category.

Commenting on the findings, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, the Communications and Public Affairs Manager at Google West Africa, said, “The 2024 Year in Search offers a unique lens into the questions, interests, and conversations that shaped the lives of Nigerians this year. From cultural milestones to pressing concerns, these insights reflect how Search continues to be a valuable tool for users to navigate and better understand their world.”

In entertainment, Nigerians also gravitated towards movies and TV series, with “A Tribe Called Judah,” “Treasure in the Sky,” and “Damsel” topping the movie charts. Popular TV series included “Supacell,” “My Demon,” and “Queen of Tears.”

The culinary world was not left behind, as Nigerians showed interest in recipes, with the “Pornstar Martini recipe” leading the searches.

Additionally, practical questions such as “How much is dollar to naira today?” and “How to get perfectly defined curls for African hair?” topped the query list. There was also a curiosity around the meaning of words like “demure,” “steeze,” and “pet peeves,” reflecting the wide range of interests and concerns that shaped the year for Nigerians.
