Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has launched a N250 million empowerment scheme for 5,200 women entrepreneurs in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that government plans to disburse N50,000 to each of the beneficiaries in the 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The monthly grant aims to support small-scale businesses and uplift the economic status of women, considering the significant burden they carry in their families.

The programme, coordinated by the Community Re-orientation Committee (CRC), targets 100 women from each of the 36 rural LGAs and 200 women from the 8 metropolitan LGAs.

In a speech at the launch of the scheme in Kano on Tuesday, the governor described the initiative as a payback to women for their overwhelming support to him during the 2023 elections.

He also said that the scheme was introduced in line with his campaign promise to make them self-reliant and support their health and entire wellbeing.

He said that the grant was intended to fund small-scale businesses, such as awara, gireba, koko da kosai, local juices and kuli-kuli.

Yusuf also said that the State Government had renovated and upgraded some hospitals, particularly maternity and paediatric units, to ease the sufferings of women and children.

Two beneficiaries of the grant described the initiative as unprecedented and capable of boosting the economy of Kano women.

Rabbi Musa from Doguwa LGA expressed gratitude to the governor for the initiative and political commitment to empowering women.

Also, Habiba Abubakar from Tudun Wada LGA said that the assistance would enhance small-scale businesses at the grassroots level.

Abubakar said that the beneficiaries were greatly indebted to the governor for the empowerment.
