During the swearing-in ceremony at the Kano State Government House, Governor Yusuf underscored the importance of the elections, citing their alignment with the recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the financial autonomy of Nigeria’s 774 local governments. He urged the leaders to commence their duties immediately, focusing on effective and responsible governance.
“As you may all know, in July of this year, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment affirming the financial autonomy of all 774 local government councils in the country,” Governor Yusuf stated. “In line with this, our administration quickly activated the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to conduct the local government elections.”
He highlighted the state government’s commitment to fair representation, noting that it had previously retained local government councils from the opposition without compromising their entitlements. Governor Yusuf called on the newly elected leaders to govern with integrity and to remember the accountability they owe to the people and to God.
At the African House chamber of the government house, Kano State Attorney General Bar. Haruna Isa Dederi administered the oath of office to the new chairmen. Following this, KANSIEC Chairman Prof. Sani Lawal Malumfashi presented certificates of return to each official, formally confirming them as leaders of their respective local governments.
Six political parties—AA, AAC, Accord, ADC, APM, and NNPP—participated in Saturday’s local elections.
