Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, is set to unveil a state-of-the-art clinic dedicated to providing free and comprehensive care for patients living with sickle cell disease.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, revealed this during the inauguration of the second maternal and neonatal week 2024 at Kumbotso Local Government Area on Monday.

In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the commissioner said the specialised clinic is located at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and will offer a wide range of free services, including diagnosis, consultations, medication, and surgical operations for sickle cell patients.
Bature highlighted Governor Yusuf’s commitment to addressing the burden of sickle cell anaemia, noting, “This emanated from the promises of Governor Yusuf during his electioneering campaign, as outlined in his blueprint for healthcare reform.”
He further mentioned that the governor had signed into law a premarital health screening bill, prohibiting marriages between intending couples with similar genotypes to prevent the birth of children with sickle cell anaemia.
“With this initiative, Governor Yusuf is not only tackling the root cause of the disease but also ensuring that those already living with it receive the care and support they need,” Bature added.
He described the special care centre as a reflection of the administration’s dedication to providing relief and hope for patients while promoting a healthier future for the people of Kano State.
