Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Tuesday received 30 members of opposition political parties who defected to the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).
The former opposition members cited Governor Yusuf’s performance as their reason for switching parties. This was revealed in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The defectors, who had previously contested various elective positions in the 2023 general elections under the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and National Rescue Movement (NRM), were formally welcomed into the NNPP during a special event at Africa House, Government House, Kano.
In separate remarks, the leaders of the opposition parties stated that Governor Yusuf’s commitment to building a viable society influenced their decision to join NNPP. Malam Shehu Nuhu, one of the leaders, noted that the governor’s accomplishments, particularly in the health and education sectors, convinced him to return to the NNPP.
While receiving the new members, Governor Yusuf praised their decision to recognize the truth despite political misinformation. He reassured them of the NNPP administration’s continued dedication to socio-economic development across key sectors.
“What we are doing is nothing other than implementing our party’s manifesto, Kwankwasiyya ideology, and our blueprint. Be rest assured that you will be carried along in the NNPP’s affairs and policies and programmes of the present administration for the overall development of Kano,” said Governor Yusuf.
