Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has established a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the violence and destruction that occurred during the recent #EndBadGovernance protest in Kano. The protest has sparked significant interest in uncovering the root causes of the unrest.

Daily News 24 reports that the 14-member panel, led by retired Justice Lawan Wada Mahmoud, was inaugurated on Monday at the Government House with a mandate to identify the perpetrators and sponsors behind the unrest of the protest.

Governor Yusuf emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the protest, urging the panel to explore all angles without fear or favour.

“The setting up of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry was in fulfillment of a pledge made during the inspection of the destroyed facilities. We want the panel to dig deeper into the remote and immediate causes of the senseless destructions as well as identifying the masterminds for the law of the land to take its full course,” he stated, emphasizing the link to the protest.

The Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, issued a statement following the inauguration, expressing concern over the economic losses resulting from the violence. He called for the panel to investigate the extent of the damage, including the missing documents at the high court complex, and to hold accountable those involved in the protest, regardless of their status or location in Nigeria.

Justice Lawan Wada Mahmoud, the chair of the commission, acknowledged the trust placed in the panel by the Kano State government.

“We will conduct this assignment to the best of our ability, without fear or favor, and justify the confidence the state government has placed in us,” he assured, referencing the serious nature of the protest.

The commission’s terms of reference include determining the causes of the violence and destruction, identifying those responsible, and making recommendations to prevent future occurrences. It is also tasked with assessing the damage to properties and loss of lives and proposing measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.

The commission will operate under the provisions of Section 8 of the Kano State Commission of Inquiry Law, Cap 36, Laws of Kano State of Nigeria, 2018.

The panel includes a diverse group of members from various backgrounds, such as legal experts, academics, and community leaders, to ensure a comprehensive and impartial investigation.
