Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank) has confirmed an attempted breach of its website domain, which took place on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, shortly after the bank renewed its domain name. The incident caused a temporary disruption to the bankโ€™s online services, leaving customers unable to access their accounts, which sparked concerns and speculations about a potential data breach.

In a statement released on Thursday, the bank clarified that while there was an isolated attempt to compromise its website, there has been no successful hacking or cloning of the site. GTBank emphasized that customer information was not at risk, as the bank does not store customer data on its website.

GTBank urged customers to disregard misleading media reports and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding customer data and maintaining robust security measures.

โ€œWe would like to assure all our customers and stakeholders that the bankโ€™s website has not been cloned and that there has been no compromise of customer data,โ€ the statement read.

As of Thursday afternoon, the bank’s website was reported to be back online, with normal services restored.

This incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in the financial sector, especially in a time when digital banking continues to grow rapidly.
