Gumsu Abacha Biography

Gumsu Abacha, one of the daughters of the late military Head of State, Sani Abacha, is known for her prominent family background and personal milestones. Her full name is Fatima Gumsu Abacha, and she carries a namesake tradition from Hajiya Ya-Gums Mustafa ibn Umar Elkanemi, also known as Hajiya Gumsu Mai Deribe (Ya Zara).

Parents and Family Background

Gumsu Abacha is the daughter of the late General Sani Abacha, who was a Nigerian military officer and politician. He ruled Nigeria as the military head of state from 1993 until his death in 1998. Her mother is Dr. Mrs. Maryam Sani Abacha.

The marriage of Sani Abacha and Maryam in 1965 produced six boys and three girls. Tragically, their first child, Ibrahim, died in a plane crash in 1996.

Over their 20 years of marriage, they had five children. Bayero Fadil Mohamadou is a prominent figure, serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cameroonian Agency for Standards and Quality, and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Standardization and Metrology for Islamic Countries (INMPI).

Their marriage, which was often highlighted in Nigerian media, ended in 2019 due to irreconcilable differences. Despite their initially affectionate relationship, marked by Bayero’s frequent gestures of love, the couple eventually parted ways, a fact Bayero made public by updating his Wikipedia profile.

Mai Mala Buni

In April 2021, Gumsu Abacha married Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, in a ceremony held at her brother Mohammed Abacha’s residence in Abuja. At the time, Buni was also the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker National Chairman. This marriage made her the fourth wife of Governor Buni, who had previously married Umi Adama, the daughter of his predecessor, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, just a day after his inauguration in 2019.

However, by December 2023, reports indicated that Gumsu had ended her marriage to Governor Buni. This news surfaced following a cryptic message she posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account, suggesting the dissolution of their relationship.
