A tragic incident occurred in Garin Mallam village, Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State, where a 40-year-old woman reportedly took her own life by setting herself ablaze following a divorce.

Daily News 24 reports that the distressing event was confirmed by the Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Shiisu, in a statement released on Friday.

According to DSP Shiisu, the woman, whose identity has been withheld, doused herself in petrol and set herself on fire on Thursday morning. The incident took place on the outskirts of Garin Mallam village and was reported to the police at around 7:40 a.m.

โ€œUpon receiving the report, officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters rushed to the scene and confirmed the heartbreaking incident,โ€ Shiisu said. He added that the woman’s charred remains were transported to the hospital and later handed over to her family for burial.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman had been suffering from depression for several months following her divorce. The police believe that this emotional distress may have driven her to take such a drastic step.

In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, Mr. Ahmadu Abdullahi, urged the public to turn to faith and seek counsel during difficult times. He emphasized the importance of reaching out to elders or seeking professional advice when faced with overwhelming challenges, to prevent such tragic outcomes.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the need for mental health awareness and support systems, particularly for those experiencing severe emotional distress.
