The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has issued a 15-day ultimatum to embark on an indefinite strike action if their demands are not met.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Hospital, Abdurrahman Abba Shehe and dated 6th October, 2022, the Union stated that it is embarking on the strike due his insensitivity to its demands.

The Union further stated that it has lost confidence in the leadership style of the CMD and has no choice than to embark on the strike.

The Union explained that it had issued six demands to the CMD including selling of hospital units to private enterprises, stagnating qualified staff, flouting federal government circulars and arbitrary charges for hospital services.

Others include, scarcity of drugs and other hospital constables and highhandedness to staff as well as witch hunting of the the Union members.

Part of the letter which is signed by the various associations leaders under the union of the hospital reads:

“The Joint Health Sector Union of AKTH, arising from its expanded meeting of the executives of the various associations under its union have resolved to give the Chief Medical Director of the hospital a 15-day notice for embarking on a total strike action.

“The Union has no further option but to embark on the strike after several communications from the Union to the CMD without any response. This has displayed insensitivity of the CMD to Union demands” the letter stated.
