The Kano State Government has announced plans to renew hunting licenses across the state as part of its strategy to conserve wildlife and safeguard the environment.

Ahmad Halliru Sawaba, Special Adviser to the Governor on Wildlife Conservation, made this known during a press conference in Kano.

He emphasized that wildlife resources should be treated as public assets, regulated by law, and accessible only through proper certification. “Wildlife can only be hunted for legitimate purposes, and all killings must be documented and subject to official investigation,” Sawaba stated.

Sawaba expressed concerns over the decline in wildlife populations in Kano, attributing the loss to urbanization, unregulated hunting, and a lack of effective government intervention in conservation planning. He highlighted the urgent need for better management of these natural resources.

To tackle these challenges, the government plans to enhance the Kano Zoological Garden, aiming to elevate its status as a top zoo in Nigeria to attract tourism and investment.

Additionally, Sawaba disclosed that the government is developing an eight-year master plan for wildlife conservation. “The comprehensive plan, compiled by stakeholders and experts, is designed to guide conservation efforts in the state,” he added.

The initiative is expected to ensure sustainable wildlife management and promote environmental protection in Kano.
