Residents of Dorayi-Karama are urgently appealing for intervention as their community faces escalating insecurity linked to communal clashes between the Unguwa Gobirawa and Unguwa Bello thugs.

Dailynews24 reports that these persistent security challenges are severely impacting the well-being of the local population, disrupting and crippling businesses, and straining external relations.

The root of the conflict trace back to the killing of a community leader in Gobirawa by some faction from Unguwa Bello and ever since a series of communal clash has taken place ceremoniously.

These clashes have been recurrent, particularly around the 10th to 15th days of Ramadan and during Eid al-Fitr. The resulting instability has left the community vulnerable to continuous threats.

Local residents have described how the situation has enabled criminal elements to exploit the unrest. “During the end of the #ENDBADGOVERNANCE protest, the community experienced numerous attacks by thugs, including phone snatching, shop burglaries, house robberies, and assaults on passersby at night. This has instilled a deep-seated fear among the people,” said one resident.

Attempts by local security forces and community leaders to curbs these issues have largely been ineffective. A resident commented, “There have been numerous instances when thugs clashed and infiltrated the community. When security operatives arrived, the thugs overpowered them and continued their attacks.”

He also recounted an incident where a district head seeking help was attacked by hostile groups. The persistent insecurity has severely impacted local businesses and daily life in the community.

In light of these challenges, residents are calling on the state government to take decisive action. They urge the establishment of a police outpost and the enhancement of local security forces to address and mitigate the ongoing threats.

Furthermore, the community youth are reaching out to non-governmental organizations and international agencies to aid in peace-building initiatives.

The pressing need for a thorough strategy to restore stability and guarantee safety highlights the critical importance of a unified response from all tiers of government and civil society.
