Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, on Thursday, stressed the need for people of his emirate to embrace personal and environmental hygiene.

Making the call during a sensitization workshop organised by the United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), held at his palace, the Emir said adhering to the rules of hygiene was now paramount, especially with the incessant outbreak of cholera disease.

“Since cholera keeps recurring, we need to adopt a preventive approach, instead of just responding to outbreaks.

“Our people need to avoid open defecation and ensure proper personal hygiene, as well as maintain a clean environment.

“People should drink water only from safe sources, and when in doubt, boil the water properly to reduce the chances of viruses spreading through it,” he admonished.

The Royal Father also directed District Heads to encourage household and ensure that expectant mothers attended ante-natal clinics, and also embrace exclusive breastfeeding.

“When the child is born, there is need for exclusive breastfeeding to protect the child from diseases,” he said, adding that vaccinating them against the killer diseases was also paramount.

On COVID-19, the emir commended the Federal and state governments for procurement of vaccines and ensuring administration.

Bayero further commended the State Task Force Committee on COVID-19 and Development Partners, for providing support to people of the state.

He then urged the people to get vaccinated as soon as possible, so as not to contract the virus.

“Even after being vaccinated, people are enjoined to continue observing prevention measures, such as correctly wearing a face mask and washing hands frequently,” he advised. (NAN)
