Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has given all landowners in the state until January 31, 2025, to register or renew their Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O), warning that failure to comply will lead to the revocation of land titles.
The announcement was made by the State Commissioner of Land and Physical Planning, Abduljabbar Umar, during a press briefing on Wednesday in Kano.
Umar stressed that landowners, including those who acquired properties since the state’s creation, must visit the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning to complete the registration process. He added that all current C-of-Os would become invalid after the deadline.
“If you may recall, on November 25, 2024, during the re-commissioning of the Kano State Geographic Information System (KANGIS) building, Governor Abba Yusuf officially launched the recertification exercise for all Certificates of Occupancy issued by the Kano State Government. He urged residents to seize the opportunity to register or renew their property documents,” Umar stated.
Highlighting the benefits of the recertification exercise, Umar said the process will modernize land management through KANGIS’s state-of-the-art infrastructure.
“The new system eliminates manual processes, reducing errors, manipulation, and delays in land transactions. The new C-of-O certificates also feature advanced security measures, making them nearly impossible to forge and safeguarding property owners against fraud,” he added.
Umar called on residents to act promptly, stressing the importance of securing reliable ownership records to prevent disputes and protect investments.
Governor Yusuf’s initiative is designed to streamline land management, enhance security, and provide landowners with a smooth process for securing and updating their property titles.
The government assured residents that the recertification process is affordable and efficient, encouraging landowners to visit the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning or KANGIS to complete the process before the January 31 deadline.
