The Kano State government has firmly opposed the tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing them as poorly timed and detrimental to national unity.
This stance was announced by the state’s deputy governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, who represented Governor Abba Yusuf at the New Year celebration held at the Mahaha Open Theatre in Kano.

While commending the resilience of Kano residents amidst economic hardship, Governor Yusuf said, “The proposed tax laws are ill-timed, lopsided, and inimical to the unity of the country. Nigerians in general, and the north in particular, are growing under hyperinflation and unprecedented insecurity. The presidency should focus more on tackling extreme poverty and hunger, especially in the northern part of the country.”
He emphasized that “this tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges. Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people.”
Governor Yusuf also highlighted his administration’s achievements in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship initiatives. He reminded citizens of the Supreme Court ruling in January 2024, which upheld his election victory.
Celebrating the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano in 2024, Yusuf described it as a triumph of the people’s will. He reiterated that the authority to appoint an Emir lies solely with the governor and urged external actors to respect the law and maintain peace in the emirate.
The event featured performances by renowned Hausa artists, with families enjoying the festivities. A spectacular fireworks display at midnight lit up the Kano skyline, symbolizing hope and renewal for the year ahead.
Residents were urged to remain united and optimistic. “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress. Together, we will build a stronger Kano,” Yusuf stated.
Earlier, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Jibril Falgore, extended his New Year greetings and called on citizens to continue supporting the government’s efforts in delivering democratic dividends.
