The Kano Ministry of Commerce in collaboration with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Association of Cartons and Waste Recycling Dealers of Nigeria (ACREWDON) has shutdown four Chinese Waste Collection Centres.

Daily News 24 reports that the Chinese firms were said to be operating illegally in Kano State.

Speaking to Newsmen, National President of ACREWDON, Comrade Salisu Ali Yarima noted that it took the Association four years to actualize the dream.

“This lingering issue is worrisome as for the last 4 years we were battling to actualize this dream for shutting down the collection centers with a view to allowing the indigenous collection centres to
aspire and be the sole suppliers of raw materials for waste cartons and rubber to the Chinese industries.

“The Kano State government has come to our rescue now. The action taken by the Kano State government will surely impact where it is supposed to and in the same vein give more impetus to the development of the Kano State Government and the Nigerian
economy, to the growth and improved revenue generation capacity, through the payment of Government tax as at when due.

“Increase wealth in respect of our business and above all will pave way for at least 20,000 youth employment in the state who are as of now rendered jobless due to the illegal taking over of the business by the
Chinese firms.

The ACREWDON National President hinted that the firms were shut because of the inability of the Chinese firms to produce certificate of trade registration for the year 2020 – 2021, lack of certificate of business registration for the year 2020-2021, and, lack of evidence of business permit, inability to produce names and the qualification of their present employees.

Mr Yarima commended the Kano state Government for taking the step saying, “the Government of Kano State is the first to comply with Mr. Presidents directives or rather Executive order which prohibited the Federal Ministry of Interior not to issue Visa to any foreigner whose skills are readily available in Nigeria and another directive given to the Comptroller General of Immigration to ensure that no Chinese firm should engage in retail business because it is a crime.”

Also speaking, the Kano State Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ado Riruwai commended efforts of the Kano Government and describes the act by the Chinese firms as worrisome.

He appeals to the Chinese firms residing in Kano State to establish recycling industries in the State instead of refilling with a view to improve the socio-economic wellbeing of the people and also employ indigenes of the state.
