A public affairs commentator, Abdullahi Midi Kafin Maiyaki has observed that he received with mixed feelings the decision by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the state to give directive for resumption of works on the five kilometre road projects across the 44 local government without due diligence.

Kafin Maiyaki, who barred his mind on the issue said that the directive clearly indicated the NNPP government’s highest level of incompetency in governance.

He also said that the directive, which is contained in a public announcement on the road projects initiated and abandoned 10 years ago, failed to give details on how the works would resume.

Kafin Maiyaki said some of the projects were completed through funding from Senators, members of the House of Representatives as well as some by the immediate past government in the state.

The public affairs commentator further noted that the state government ought to have find out when was the Bill of Quantity reviewed and how much was paid to individual contractors and how much balances were left.

He pointed out that the government should also have conducted an integrity tests on the road works across the state to ensure their standard having been abandoned more than 10 years ago.

Kafin Maiyaki also wondered why such directive was given to all contractors that handled the road projects without finding out whether all of them are alive and in good financial position to resume work immediately.

The public analyst observed further that while the projects were jointly executed between the state and local government, the consent of the third tier of government should also have been sought on the resumption of the projects.

He added that the government, which took over power in the middle of this year, might not have the assurances that the 5km projects have been captured in the 2023 budgetary provisions for both state and local governments.

Kafin Maiyaki said while the completion of the projects is a good idea, the people of Kano demand clarification on the issues raised for accountability, transparency and integrity of the government which they always claim to profess.
