A Kano State High Court has postponed the hearing of applications in the ongoing emirship tussle case to July 4.
The case involves a motion ex parte filed by the Attorney General of Kano State, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly through their counsel, Ibrahim Isah-Wangida, Esq. The motion, dated May 27, seeks to restrain the 15th emir, Aminu Ado-Bayero, and four other dethroned emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye from parading themselves as traditional rulers.

The respondents in the case are Aminu Ado-Bayero; Alhaji Nasiru Ado-Bayero, the emir of Bichi; Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar II, the emir of Karaye; Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad-Inuwa, the emir of Rano; and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim-Gaya, the emir of Gaya. Additional respondents include the Inspector-General of Police, the Director of the State Security Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Army.
During the hearing, counsel to the applicants, Mr. Eyitayo Fatogun SAN, informed the court that he received five processes from the first respondent on July 1 at about 6:30 p.m. He stated, “My lord, we received the respondent’s five processes yesterday evening and we have filed all our responses. We urge the court to give us 30 minutes stand down to enable us to serve the respondent with our responses.”
However, counsel to Ado-Bayero, Mr. Abdul Muhammed SAN, opposed the 30-minute stand down and requested an adjournment to allow him to reply and file all their applications.
Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu subsequently adjourned the matter until July 4 for the hearing of all pending applications and the originating motion.
The court had previously issued an interim injunction on May 27, restraining the respondents from parading themselves as emirs in the interest of peace in Kano.
Additionally, the State House of Assembly dissolved all four newly created emirate councils on May 23, and Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf reappointed Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.
