Electricity consumers in various local government areas of Jigawa and Yobe states are experiencing outages following a trailer collision with a power transmission tower in Kano.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that the accident occurred on Sunday, August 11, 2024, when the trailer crashed into the base of TCNโs tower T16 in Gunduwawa Village, Gezawa Local Government Area.

According to TCN, โAt about 9.28am yesterday, August 11th 2024, the KanoโHadejia 132kV Transmission Line tripped, losing about 16.6MW. Trial re-closure of the line to enable continued bulk power supply failed, prompting the immediate dispatch of a patrol team to survey the line. The team found that a trailer truck carrying a container had hit tower T16 situated in Gunduwawa and destroyed two legs of the tower causing it to buckle and fall.โ
The collision not only caused the line to trip but also resulted in the tower falling onto the container and damaging a nearby residential building. Although there were no casualties, the driver has been detained and the incident reported to the Gezawa Divisional Police Station.
TCN General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, stated that the accident has left several local government areas in both states without power, including Hadejia, Gumel, Gagarawa, Nguru, Mallammadori, and others. โCurrently, there is no alternative source of bulk power supply to two of TCNโs substations, the Gagarawa and Hadejia substations,โ Mbah noted.
TCN has committed to “quickly dismantle the damaged tower, re-erect a new one, and restring the lines” to restore power to the affected areas.
