The Farm Centre GSM market in Kano city has shut down for business as traders participate in the election of the market’s new leadership.

Daily News 24 correspondent reports that the busy mobile phone market was deserted on Wednesday as traders headed for the polls, which was taking place at the Nasarawa local government secretariat.

The election, which will determine leadership positions within the GSM market, is being closely monitored by security agents to ensure a smooth and secure process.

Business owners from the GSM village have turned out in large numbers to participate in the election, reflecting the high stakes of the election for the traders.

Abdulsamad Abdullahi, a former Chairman of the Farm Center GSM market, outlined the positions to be contested as follows: Executive Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Public Relations Officer (PRO) and Assistant PRO.

Others are Organizing Secretary, Financial Secretary, Auditor General, Welfare Officer, and Treasurer.

Mr Abdullahi further noted that the election was proceeding peacefully and efficiently.

However, it was learnt that security agents, in collaboration with the election organizers have uncovered an alleged case of fraudulent voter cards distributed by a contestant for the Executive Chairman position.

But some voters have expressed their satisfaction with the process.

Muhammad Sanusi, a trader, commented on the peaceful atmosphere, stating, “I am very grateful to God for the peaceful atmosphere here.

As you can see, people are casting their votes peacefully. I am optimistic that my chosen candidate will win.”

Daily News 24 reports that voting was scheduled to conclude by 2PM on Wednesday, with results expected to be announced later in the evening.

Further updates will follow as the process continued.
