The Kano State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has resolved to resume full medical services at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital following the intervention of Governor Abba Yusuf.
The move comes after a conflict between the association and the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Aisha Abdullahi, over an alleged assault on a medical doctor.

Speaking with reporters, NMA Chairman, Dr. Abdurrahman Ali, stated that the decision to resume services was taken to allow the Governor to address the situation.
“Upon meeting with the Governor, he informed us that he has received the report from the investigative committee and assured us that justice will be served,” Dr. Ali explained. He added, “We held an e-conference with our members and resolved to resume full services to continue the negotiations.”
Previously, the NMA had issued a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding the dismissal of the commissioner involved. The association had directed its members at the state-owned hospital to withdraw their services if the ultimatum was not met.
Governor Abba Yusuf appealed to the NMA to halt its industrial action, emphasizing the potential risks to the health of over 20 million Kano residents. He urged the association to allow the investigative panel to complete its work before taking drastic measures. “I know how many planned strikes by the NMA were averted due to our good relationship. The welfare of doctors is a priority for the state government,” Yusuf remarked.
The Governor further assured that any government official found guilty of misconduct would face consequences. He apologized on behalf of the state and urged the NMA to consider the welfare of patients, especially pregnant women awaiting delivery, by calling off the strike.
