The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Kano State Government, threatening industrial action if its members’ demands are not met.

The ultimatum, which started on October 2, 2024, was announced following the governmentโ€™s failure to address key issues affecting nurses and midwives in a series of communications.

The notice, signed by the associationโ€™s acting State Secretary and Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Sharada, was addressed to the Kano State Head of Civil Service. It warned that nurses across clinical facilities and training institutions would withdraw their services after the notice expires on October 16, 2024.

โ€œThe notice commences from Wednesday, 2nd October, to 16th October 2024,โ€ the notice stated.

The association’s demands include the payment of a revised hazard allowance, harmonisation of the Scheme of Service for nurses, and the implementation of a 259% salary increase under the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

This ultimatum follows an indefinite strike by medical doctors in Kano, under the National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners, which began on October 1, 2024.

According to Dr. Anas Hassan, the associationโ€™s secretary, the doctors initiated the strike due to the governmentโ€™s failure to honour its previous commitments.
