No fewer than 1,331 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, Kano State, have defected to the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP).
The defection, which took place on Thursday, saw prominent figures such as Malam Kwa, former vice chairman of the local government, and Hon. Audu Tumfafi, a former state House of Assembly aspirant, joining the NNPP.

The decampees, who hail from 11 wards in the area, vowed to oppose the APC’s return to power in the state.
Speaking at the defection ceremony held in Dawakin Tofa, the NNPP state chairman, Hon. Hashimu Dungurawa, commended the new members for their decision and assured them of equal opportunities within the party.
Dungurawa emphasized that the NNPP, under the leadership of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, remains dedicated to the socio-economic and infrastructural development of Kano State. He dismissed rumors of mass defections from the NNPP to the APC, asserting that the party is maintaining its control across the state’s wards.
“We learned one APC man has been receiving members of the NNPP into APC. We have checked the roll call of our members, and we have not noticed any reduction in our numerical strength,” Dungurawa stated. He also warned the public to be cautious of individuals attempting to deceive them. “I need to advise them to beware of 419 people coming to collect the public funds in the name of decampees.”
In his remarks, Kwa accused former governor Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, a native of Dawakin Tofa, of failing to develop the area during his eight years in office. He further alleged that Ganduje’s poor management of the APC contributed to the former governor’s inability to win a House of Representatives seat in the 2023 general elections.
