The Kano State government has launched a renewed effort to combat indiscriminate waste disposal by introducing waste bins in public transport systems and strategic locations across the state.

The initiative, part of the Kano State Waste Management and Refuse Disposal Initiative, was flagged off by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashimu.

Dr. Hashimu explained that waste bins have been installed in tricycles, known locally as Adaidaita Sahu, and commercial buses to encourage commuters to dispose of their trash responsibly while in transit. Additionally, bins have been placed at major roads, motor parks, and marketplaces to reduce littering and promote environmental cleanliness.

“The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Ministries of Transportation and Commerce, is committed to addressing waste management challenges across Kano State. These efforts aim to ensure that commuters, traders, and residents dispose of waste responsibly,” Hashimu said.

The commissioner emphasized that the initiative reflects the commitment of Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, to maintaining a clean, healthy, and environmentally friendly state. He highlighted that street sweepers have also been reintroduced to key areas in Kano City, with their backlog of salaries cleared to boost morale and effectiveness.

“This intervention not only reduces waste accumulation but also provides job opportunities for Kano residents. We are deploying street sweepers strategically to major roads, marketplaces, and public spaces to ensure a cleaner environment for both residents and visitors,” Hashimu added.

Dr. Hashimu called for active participation from all stakeholders, including transport operators, market traders, and residents, urging them to use the provided bins and avoid littering. He also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and religious institutions to raise awareness about the importance of environmental cleanliness.

“A clean environment is not just the responsibility of the government but a shared responsibility that requires the commitment of all stakeholders. We invite private sector partners to collaborate with us on waste-to-wealth initiatives, which will contribute to a cleaner and more prosperous Kano State,” he stated.

The commissioner reiterated that the initiative aligns with the governor’s vision of fostering sustainable urban development while enhancing public health and creating a more appealing environment for residents and visitors.
