Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing the Kano South senatorial district, has revealed that he earns a total of N21 million monthly in salary and allowances, following a recent pay increase.
The senator disclosed this information during an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday morning.
Senator Sumaila clarified that his official salary is under N1 million, which, after deductions, amounts to approximately N600,000.
However, he explained that each senator receives an additional N21 million per month as running costs, which is separate from their official salary.
“My monthly salary is less than N1 million. After deductions, the figure comes down to a little over N600,000,” Senator Sumaila stated. “Given the increase effected, in the Senate, each Senator gets N21 million every month as running cost.”
This revelation comes amid ongoing debates about the earnings of federal lawmakers in Nigeria, especially in the context of current economic challenges.
The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) had earlier reported that each senator’s total monthly salary and allowances amount to N1,063,860, which includes a basic salary of N168,866.70 and various allowances for vehicle maintenance, personal assistants, domestic staff, entertainment, utilities, newspapers, wardrobe, house maintenance, and constituency expenses.
