Kano State Governor Alh. Abba Kabir Yusuf has inaugurated a state advisory committee on the new national minimum wage.

This development comes just 48 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the new N70,000 minimum wage following an agreement with the organized Labour union.

Kano is the first state in the country to establish such a committee. The inauguration ceremony, held at the State Government House, was conducted by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, on behalf of Governor Yusuf.

Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, the Deputy Governorโ€™s Spokesperson, issued a statement to the press emphasizing the committeeโ€™s significant role.

According to Governor Yusuf, the committee is tasked with planning effectively for the newly approved minimum wage and presenting a practical recommendation for immediate implementation by the state government.

Governor Yusuf highlighted that the implementation of the new minimum wage is expected to spur development across all sectors in Kano State, underscoring the governmentโ€™s commitment to the welfare of its workers.

The committee is expected to deliver its findings within three weeks. Governor Yusuf reminded committee members that their selection was merit-based and urged them to produce convincing results.

The newly appointed Chairman of the Committee, Alh. Usman Bala Muhammad, who also serves as the Special Adviser to the Governor on State Affairs, expressed gratitude for the governmentโ€™s confidence in the committee. He pointed out the exercise’s significant impact on thousands of workers in both the private and public sectors, aiming to balance the interests of employers, employees, and the public.

Alh. Usman Bala Muhammad assured that the committee would employ thorough data analysis and consider all relevant factors to arrive at a sustainable minimum wage recommendation for the state government.
