Residents in Kano south senatorial district are disgruntled about the state of constituency projects in certain areas in the domain. The non-completion, haphazard and non-inclusion of the constituents in the delivery of the projects are the reason why they are displeased.

In furtherance of its campaign to quicken citizens’ vigilance to improve transparency and accountability in the delivery of constituency projects in Kano south senatorial district, the Resource Center for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has engaged constituents of the senatorial district in a community accountability town hall report back session.

The accountability session which engaged constituents of Tudun Wada, Doguwa and Rogo Local Government Areas (LGA), gave the citizens the opportunity to air their views about the state of their community’s constituency projects.

Shuaibu Sabiu, a resident of Rogo LGA said he, just like other residents in the locality he is unaware of some of the constituency projects in his LGA as the lawmakers representing his constituency nominate projects in localities without needs assessment of the people.

‘’Sometimes the people might be in need of water, school, medical facilities, drainages and other pressing needs but our representatives award contracts without requesting the needs of the people and all we would wake up to see that construction work has commenced in a certain location without asking the people.

‘’In my locality, some of the teachers go to school with their own mats because the school lack adequate facilities and the same goes for the children’’ he said.

He added that the monies spent on some of the projects awarded are quite huge but are deficient in looks when compared to the huge monies said to have been spent. ‘’I want to call on those representatives to have the fear of God in their hearts.

‘’When it is time for elections they will seek our votes and subsequently forget about us. Also, I am calling on other citizens to vote the right people into power so that they will not be neglected after getting into power.’’ Saibu concluded.

For, Mr Musbahu Rabiu, a constituent of Tudun Wada LGA, the state of Kuburu primary school in the LGA is one which worries him because whenever it rains, both staff and students bear the brunt of the dilapidated structure of the school as most parts of the school’s roofs are worn out.

Mr Rabiu also notes that even though some projects are completed, it wears out in a little time and he questions the quality of the structures. ‘’The problem I have with some of the projects our representatives nominate and award is that within two years of establishing those structures, they begin to fade away.

‘’In some cases, about a hundred million will be said to have been spent on some projects while they are substandard. I am sad because it is the money of citizens that are spent recklessly and  they don’t get to fully benefit from it.’’ He stated.

Asides Shuaibu and Musbahu, other constituents voiced their displeasure on the state of constituency projects in Kano south senatorial district.

Meanwhile, Mallam Lawan Rogo an aide of the lawmaker representing the Karaye/Rogo federal constituency refutes the claims of some constituents who spoke during the report back session, stating that in Karaye and Rogo LGAs projects which have been constructed such as classrooms, solar-powered streetlights, repairs of transformers and many others,  of which all are standard and still in use, at the time of filing this report.
