Ahead of Eid el-Fitr celebrations which officially marks the end of Ramadan, tailors in Kano State have been making brisk business and smiling to the banks in spite the current economic hardship.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the demand for new dresses for the festivities led to the high demand for tailors by Kano residents.

Usually, tailors use the opportunity every year to work round the clock due to high demand for new clothes, hence record high sales at this season of the year in spite of the high charges for services rendered.

A cross section of the tailors, who spoke to NAN, expressed delight over the high demand for their services.

Malam Dauda Rabiu, a tailor in Dakata, said he had recorded remarkable increase in the number of customers patronising his services in the past weeks.

Rabiu explained that his charges for sewing clothes range from N3,500 and above, depending on the type of dress.

Muhammad Ali, another tailor in Fagge, said he recorded high patronage from residents  in spite of the current economic situation.

”People started trooping into my shop with their fabrics for sewing at the begining of Ramadan.

”I’m not certain I will finish the number of jobs waiting for me before the eid day and this is why I have stopped collecting fresh work since the second week of Ramadan,” he said

On her part, Amina Yahaya, a tailor from Rijiyar Zaki, said that her charges ranges from N5,000 and above, depending on the type of dress, design and style, adding that the patronage had been impressive.

But a resident, Aliyu Kabir, said that his tailor had disappointed him as his clothes were not ready at the agreed date.

“In spite of charging me  N15,000 for three sets of clothes, these clothes are yet to be sewed.

“My worry is that my children may not get new clothes to wear during the eid, but the tailor promised to finish his work tomorrow, so I’m waiting to see the miracle he will do,” he explained.

Another resident, Raliya Idris, decried the exorbitant charges by tailors, adding that they were taking advantage of the situation to exploit the poeple.
