Members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN)have allegedly lynched Musa Mai Dori, a well-known teacher of the Qur’an at Unguwar Dabai, in Kankare, a community in Gwale LGA of Kano State.

According to reports, Mai Dori was severely beaten by the vigilantes on Sunday morning in their office after a woman accused him of stealing a newborn baby that he was supposed to have rescued from a garbage dump.

Ibrahim, one of the sons of the deceased teacher narrated their ordeal;

“He was passing through and heard a newborn child crying at a dump site. He decided to pick up the toddler, and in the process, a woman shouted at him, calling him a child thief,” Ibrahim said.

“The alarm raised by the woman attracted the attention of the members of a vigilante group and other members of the community who started beating him.

“They took him to the vigilante’s office and continued the beating. He subsequently, collapsed.

“Some residents identified him and rushed him to a hospital, but he gave up the ghost on the way to the hospital.

Muhammad Ashiru Salisu, a brother of the deceased, claimed that the boys who attacked the man knew him well and that what they did was wicked and intentional.

“He had good human relations and taught many of the youths in this area. Yesterday in the evening we heard about the brutal act of some of the vigilante group of Kankare area.

“The incident happened in the morning but we learnt about it in the evening. Malam left home in the morning, while passing by, he saw a newly born baby in a ditch. In his effort to retrieve the child, a woman who was beside him shouted that he wanted to steal the boy.” He added.

Two spouses, Khadija and Sha’awa, as well as 16 children survive Mai Dori, who died at the age of 50.

When reached, Shehu Rabiu, the state’s Commandant of VGN, stated that the command was not aware but that he would investigate and get back, Daily Trust reports.

Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the police spokesman in Kano, confirmed the occurrence stating that six vigilantes had been detained while an investigation was taking place.
