In a bid to address pressing concerns regarding healthcare delivery in Kano State, the Kano State Led Accountability Mechanism (KanSLAM) embarked on a comprehensive advocacy visit today to the Executive Secretary of the Hospital Management Board in Kano.

The visit was prompted by a press release issued by the board several weeks ago, highlighting issues at the Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital.

KanSLAM took proactive measures to investigate the matter and extended its scrutiny to other healthcare facilities including Murtala Muhammad General Hospital, Sheikh Jidda Hospital, and Sir Sunusi Hospital. Shockingly, the findings revealed a pattern of similar challenges across all the visited hospitals.

Hajiya Maimuna Yakubu Muhammad, the co-chair of the Civil Society Organization (CSO) spearheading the advocacy visit, alongside Murtala Abubakar, the government co-chair, introduced KanSLAM and emphasized its mandate which includes supporting the healthcare system to enhance service delivery.

During the engagement, the Executive Secretary expressed gratitude for the visit and candidly discussed the observed challenges within the hospitals. Among these challenges, he highlighted the concerning “I don’t care” attitude exhibited by some medical personnel.

In response, he disclosed plans for forthcoming training and sensitization programs aimed at instigating a positive behavior change among the staff.

Furthermore, the Executive Secretary commended KanSLAM for its efforts and expressed hope for continued support and collaboration to address the systemic issues plaguing the healthcare sector in Kano State.

Dr. Rahila, the Executive Secretary of Kano State Contributory Healtcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) was present alongside other members of KanSLAM from various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) at the meeting, underscoring the collective commitment towards achieving tangible improvements in the healthcare landscape of Kano State.

The advocacy visit serves as a pivotal step towards fostering accountability and transparency within the healthcare system, with stakeholders united in their resolve to effect positive change for the benefit of the populace.
